A Friend of Suzbox summoned us to do a ride with him and another friend. To Loeriesfontein. Because of my reputation to find an alternative road I was entrusted with the planning of the trip.

Suxbox is a very unreliable Dawg. Only one post in his entire career. But an excellent sport. Equally important, an archaeology student in his younger days. Friend of Suzbox, FOS, is just a good sport. To his credit, he is a never-ending optimist with a plan for everything. Hopefully he’ll join WD after this trip and ride report.

On Friday we left Vellerif for Piekenierskloof to meet the other friend from Worcester. The plan was to take every possible measure to stay off the cancerous tar. So we got on the gravel just outside Vellerif.

We took the road to Aurora and then Redelinghuis. Beautiful this time of year with lush green fields and good roads. Nice little rural roads with trekkers en waens all over.

We went very slowly and made sure to spend all our energy to sniff out the back roads. We also found this, the old pass up Piekenierskloof. For a long time I was looking forward to this.

On top of the mountain is the beautiful farm stall Kardoesie. There we ate a sandwich and met Player 23.

Player 23

From there we took the road to Paleisheuwel. It runs on the mountain between the fruit farms. Later we took a right turn on a road that we expected to go to, or in the direction of Clanwilliam. It was a gamble, because it ran right to a crest in the mountain.

It paid off and we followed a very nice road to meet the N-7 just before Clanwilliam dam.

We went into town, bought the odd battery, pie and cash, ready for the Maskam. We tackled Pakhuispas. The roads department are still working at the pass. Why they mess up this beautiful place with a tarred road, I don’t know.

Going up the pass, I had the humiliating experience to be outrun by an Isuzu 2,5 diesel. I will say no more. Player 23 dished that story out at every possible occasion.

We did our obligatory stop at the Englishman’s grave, shared some cut biltong and smiled at the public. Friendly bikers.

After a few kilometers we turned North to Moedverloor. A favorite route of my friend Tok-tokkie. It is a twee-spoor paadjie with gates and Dorper sheep all over. Merrycan and me did this road two years ago, but from the North. It was an ordeal. Overloaded bike on a slippery road in the rain. This time the road was true and the weather beautiful. Our first stop was this cave.

The crowd.

Some more rock art.

Some of the houses, some not in use, others still used. I think Tok-tokkie did a little bit of the historie of these houses in a report some time ago.

At Nieuwoudtville we filled up and drank a beer at the Smitswinkel. Hendrik van Zijl’s place. We did the usual ooh and ah at the bike guy’s workshop. It is worth the stop for any biker.

FOS having fun.

Smoke break for the solitary smoker.

From there we planed to go on a detour towards Calvinia to stay on the gravel, but sense, however suspect, guided us to take the tar to Loeriesfontein. The distance was half the gravel road, but it was tar! The only conciliation was an old favourite.

At Loeriesfontein we checked into the local Hotel and started our outreach with a visit to the canteen. Excellent notion. After we took a shower we indulged in a few skaap tjoppies. Massive heaps of meat with a lining of good wholesome fat. We were treated with the wisdom of the local crowd, telling us all about Loeriesfontein and the plan for the next day.

Now I might tell the reason for the visit to Loeriesfontein. They have a private school with, and I must check with Wikipedia, 23 pupils. Saturday is a fund-raising for the school. The day consists of among other things, a route in the Knersvlakte. This was the reason for our visit. Of cause the route to the route was the real thing, but hell, to be treated like celebrities is just cool. We were the visitors. Like all small towns, almost everybody were an educated person or an ex. Ex-policeman, ex-attorney, ex-dominee, ex-wife or ex-racist. Lots of ex-teachers among the women.

Player 23 has beautiful blue eyes, even as a man I can see that. He also has a six-pack, well hidden under a wel established protective layer, acquired from good use of the healthy fat on skaaptjoppies. But he has the ability to turn women’s heads. He is also the only member of our clan who can legally represent us in possible dealings or negotiations with individuals from Venus. Sadly, everything ended sooner than it began and we were even considering playing pool. None of us were prepared to compromise our status as visitors from almost outer space to something like playing pools, so we went to bed.

We had a long discussion to decide who sleeps where. The guys who snore will sleep together. In the end FOS and Player 23 slept in one room since we all snore. Not like Trailrider, but we are learning.

Great.
I am very interested in the old Piekeniers pass.  Looks magnificent.  But you went on to Paleisheuwel which means you came down again from the top; or does that pass just go over the spur of the mountain that sticks out between Eendekuil & Paleisheuwel?

The big day

We woke up to another glorious day. We packed our camping gear in some friendly guy’s bakkie and had beskuit en skuinskoek for breakfast. Player 23 bought up the Isuzu at Pakhuispas again. His day will come. That beautiful Tenere has its limitations.

We assembled at the TJ van der Walt College to await our orders. Like all rural social gatherings the Headmaster delivered his address and we were ready.

The route was shared by a small number of bikes, a few crabs and all the cages within 50 miles of Loeriesfontein.

At that very moment my tender stomach started to revolt over the tjoppies of last night. I went in search for a place of relieve. After my encounter with single ply paper cut out of a camel thorn tree, I headed for my bike with the double ply, baby soft doggie on the label rol in the ammo box. There I was, all alone, everybody left. In all four God-given wind directions I could only see Saturday morning fever. The locals hanging out and children running around. No bike, no bakkie. Shit. After biking up and down Loeriesfontein I saw the Headmaster in his Isuzu. He came to my rescue and gave me directions.

The road we took, was not for sissies. Player 23 bought some farmland up the one hill and was rescued by some guy on a crab and a laddie on a two-stroke . After that the Isuzu was forgotten.

I must admit it took me some time to get over the crowded ride and the attitude of some cage owners. After I did the Victor Frankl thing I enjoyed it a lot.

We were treated on a brunch like they do in the Knersvlakte. Meat, meat and skilpadjies for vitamins.

It is a pity these kind of roads are not accessible to the public. It is really nice.

After a lot of dust and fighting with our bikes over rocky terrain, we stopped at the overnight point, also the circus maximus for the evening.

The artist for the evening was a guy from Redelinghuis. Cannot remember his name. He dished out jokes non-stop. He speaks with a heavy Namakwaland accent and is ready with a hilarious comment on everything around him. Can also sing fairly well. The lead guitarist is very good. Did a very nice piece of Mark Knopfler.

Then they started with the auction. Lots of stuff, from the usual wine and brandy, to handcraft, succulents and more. They raised a lot of money.

After that the band played again. By this time Suzbox and FOS were tired and made there beds right next to the stage, to the dismay of the lead singer.

Player 23 once again had his hands full with women who saw him as a potential sperm donor.

The two of us tried to outlive the crowd, even though we were very tired. After the last people left, we made out beds in a reed shack with a nice fireplace. We lid a huge fire and enjoyed the absolute silence. Only the snoring of our fallen mates disturbed the moment.

Rescued by a guy on a crab……

Piekeniers is very nice, I'll show you. We went on the road to Paleisheuwel but turned right two times. That road down to the N-7 is really an interesting one. There are still a lot of roads and tracks that I have to explore. I just found out about a nice road that you can take from just before Van Rhynsdorp on the N-7 up Maskam and eventually to the Cederberg/Pakhuispas.

Sunday

We slept good and woke up to another clear day. We drank coffee and packed. We are going to take the railway road back to Velddrift. This is a road with massive potential. You can travel from Sishen to Saldana with it and get on and off when you like. Sometimes there is an overactive tollgate operator at some points, but it is more or less as you near the West Coast. Then you can always negotiate.

With my humble little bike I am a bit of a nuisance on these roads. The big boys want to go fast and sometimes they did.

In the end we were outrun by a train, stopping at too many spots for a smoke or a pee. Not all of us smoke, but we all pee.  (Suzbox's pic)

The road is a bit boring, as it is straight and in a very good condition, but the scenery is still nice.

As we approached Lutzville we started to look at the distance, we need petrol. Especially the DRZ400. We reached the petrol station just as FOS started to look around for a towrope.

Lutzville didn’t offer more than petrol, so we headed for Strandfontein and then Lambertsbaai. I arranged with friends that have the Sir Lambert guesthouse to prepare a brunch. (Suzbox's pic)

The road from Strandfontein to Velddrift is always a good one. Nice scenery and not too much traffic. You get back on the railway road just outside Doornbaai and then it is quickie to Lambertsbaai. Suzbox started to negotiate with the Tollenaar for half price, since we only sport two wheels per vehicle, but this time it did not work. He stripped his moer and we took the long way round. Good plan as it is a very beautiful road.

At Elandsbaai we stopped for a beer and started to plan the next trip. We all enjoyed it very much. It is not often that you get a group of people that work so nicely together and have so much fun without anybody feeling sidelined.

We made a new friend in Player 23. We hope to ride with him again. Jan, Jan, Jan, die soul vannie span. Really a valuable addition to the group.

Mooi loop ou grote.
